The Royal Observatory Greenwich, in association with Sky at Night Magazine, launches its 2012 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition today – kicking off its annual global search for the most beautiful and spectacular visions of the cosmos, whether they are striking pictures of vast galaxies millions of light years away, or dramatic images of the night sky taken much closer to home.

A large sunspot 1339 is now directly facing Earth, and with a 3 day Solar-wind travel-time to Earth, there is a chance to see Aurora in northern Europe this weekend.

Comet 2010X1 Elelin which was discovered last year is now well situated to observe and easy to find, right between "the Twins", high in the South-Eastern sky, late in the evening.

Saturday evening from 20-22 UT (summertime), we have the anual Draconid meteorshower, They are remninats og the Giacobini-Zinner comet, and is a short itense shower, with op to 1000 meteors/hour. But they are generally not so bright and disturbed by a 3/4 moon. But if you plan to try to see them, you should look to the NW
