NASA's JPL has released an amazing video of the upcomming launch, descent and landing of the Mars-rover Curiosity.
The most striking difference from previous Mars missions is the breaking and descent manouver. Because of the larger weight and sensitivity of the larger rover, it can not bounce on air-bag ballons as the smaller present rovers did. Instead it will aerobrake using a heat-shield, followed by a parachute, and then separate from the interplanetary shielding to land in a "helicopter" style using rockets. |
