Scientists have discvoered mirco-fossils in quarts sand-grains, that has been dated to 3,4 bill. years of age. At that time Earth was covered with a warm sea, and had no oxygen. The discovery renews hope, that there might have been life on Mars

"At last we have good solid evidence for life over 3.4 billion years ago. It confirms there were bacteria at this time, living without oxygen," Martin Brasier, a professor at Oxford University, said in a press release acording to AFP. Sulphur-loving bacteria "are still common today", he continues.

The microbes fed on sulphur compounds and are only about 10 millionths of a metre wide.

The discovery renews hopes that there might have been similar microbes on Mars; "Could these sorts of things exist on Mars? It's just about conceivable" Brasier said.
