This wednesday 2 NEO asteroids passed the Earth well whitin the orbit of the Moon. One of them - a 6m wide clump of rock - passed the Earth in a distance only twice that of the geostationary orbit
The 10m wide asteroid 2011 GW9 passed the Earth in a distance of 192000km 06:53 am. UT - only half the distance to the Moon. Later in the eveneing, the 6m wide asteroid 2011 GP28 passed us within 77000 km at 9:36 pm. UT - Only twice the distance to the geo-synchronus orbit! Eventhough they weigh several tonnes each passing Earth at a speed more than 10km/sec, they are only half the size of the Tunguska meteor that struck Earth in 1908 |
