Surface on Mars unlikely place for life

Phoenix mars lander

Mars may have been arid for more than 600 million years, making it too hostile for any life to survive on the planet’s surface, according to researchers who have been carrying out the painstaking task of analysing individual particles of Martian soil. Dr Tom Pike, from Imperial College London, will discuss the team’s analysis at an ESA meeting on 7 February 2012.

 
IBEX detects "alien" particles

A suite of studies published in the Astrophysical Journal provide a first look at the constituents of the interstellar medium, the matter between star systems, and how they interact with our heliosphere.

Hydrogen molecules may act as a kind of energy sink that strengthens the magnetic grip that causes sunspots, according to scientists from Hawaii and New Mexico using a new infrared instrument on an old telescope.

 
Bus-sized asteroid passes Earth

The newly discovered Asteroid 2012 BX34 passed 77 000km by Earth friday at a speed of 9 km/sec. Eventhough the distance iwas only 1/5 the distance to the Moon, the passage did not pose a threat to Earth
