Why is the universe magnetized? It's a question scientists have been asking for decades. Now, an international team of researchers have demonstrated that it could have happened spontaneously, as the prevailing theory suggests.

Using ESO's APEX telescope, a team of astronomers has found the strongest link so far between the most powerful bursts of star formation in the early Universe, and the most massive galaxies found today.

A faint “satellite galaxy” 10 billion light years from Earth is the lowest-mass object ever detected at such a distance, says University of California, Davis, physics professor Chris Fassnacht, who aided in the satellite’s discovery. The finding, could help astronomers find similar objects and confirm or reject theories about the structure of the cosmos.
