Old White dwarfs star

Astronomers have identified 2 white dwarf stars considered the oldest and closest known to man. They identified these 11- to 12-billion-year-old white dwarf stars only 100 light years away from Earth making them the closest known examples of the oldest stars in the Universe formed soon after the Big Bang, according to the OU researcher.

IR and X-ray images of the Centaurus A giant elliptical galaxy

2 of ESA’s space observatories have combined to create a multi-wavelength view of violent events taking place within the giant galaxy of Centaurus A. The new observations strengthen the view that it may have been created by the cataclysmic collision of two older galaxies.

The expanding universe

An unprecedented survey of gravitationally lensed quasars, has used to measure the expansion history of the universe. The result provides strong evidence that the expansion of the universe is accelerating.

Exoplanetary-system

New anaysis of the planetary system around the star HD1080 that was known to have 6 planets orbiting it, has revealed 3 additional smaller planets. The new planets are 1,3x, 1,9x, and 5,1x the size of Earth, with orbital periods of 1, 10 and 68 days respectively. The system thus seems rather solarsystem-like, apart from the planets being much closer to their parent star
